On Saturday Feb. 22, 2014, we met at UTPB for a walk and a meeting. Participants were Criss Kohl, Ike and Cathey Graves, Karen Burden, Susan and Ken Fine, Carolyn Petersen, and Mike and Cherry Owen. Carolyn had previously obtained the Walk Box from Days Inn so we were able to stamp our booklets. The temperature was a little chilly at the outset so we decided to hold our meeting after the walk.
Along the way we noticed a male red-winged blackbird, a rabbit, and an assortment of ducks and geese at the Duck Pond. We enjoyed each others company and the beautiful day. The walking route went past the Stonehenge exhibit, new dormitories under construction, and an early Bush home.
(Participants who walked the UTPB Walk in Odessa were:
Criss Kohl, Ike and Cathey Graves, Karen Burden,
Susan and Ken Fine, Carolyn Petersen, and Mike and Cherry Owen)
Back at the parking lot, Susan Fine brought us up-to-date on the recent Texas Volkssport Association (TVA) meeting held at College Station on February 1st. She plans to write up some notes for the group.
The February Treasurer’s Report and the Minutes from the January meeting were emailed by Alex Rose to all current members earlier.
Carolyn discussed the latest progress with the TVA meeting and walk scheduled for August 2nd. There is a possibility of using the Bush Walk and holding the meeting at the nearby Girl Scout Center. This meeting will pull in TVA representatives from across the state.
A volunteer opportunity for our club will be Saturday April 5. As part of Keep Midland Beautiful (KMB) we can meet at the Windlands Park and pick up trash. Our club has had a long involvement with KMB. Criss says the project might last about one hour. There will be more information on the KMB event later.
The Club discussed where to go for the Saturday March 8 walk. Criss suggested the Big Spring State Park walk and the club agreed. For this walk we might meet at Jumburrito at the Midland Park Mall and share rides to Big Spring. We will decide on the time soon and let everyone know.
Saturday, March 22nd, is also a possibility for a short walk. Some ideas mentioned are the Sibley Nature Center near Hogan Park in northeast Midland, Comanche Park in Odessa, or the I-20 Wildlife Preserve.
Susan Fine mentioned the IVV World Walk Day in May. If our club has a walk on Saturday, May 3rd or May 10th, then each participant may receive a certificate. We can pre-order 10-15 certificates and have them on hand.
We were happy to have Mike and Cherry Owen join us on the UTPB walk. They are friends of Criss Kohl and expressed interest in joining.
After the meeting some of the Walkabouts reconvened at the Egg and I restaurant.
