On Saturday, August 2, 2014 the Midland Walkabout Volkssporting Club will host an event that has never been held here before. We are extremely excited that we’ve been asked to host the Semi-Annual Meeting of the Texas Volkssporting Association (TVA), by helping to organize their statewide event that helps to promote walking and the Volkssporting Clubs!
There will be Volkssporting Clubs visiting our fair city from all across the state of Texas, and will be walking the streets of our city, as well as Odessa, and surrounding areas.
This year, there will be a 5K and a 10K walk on Saturday morning which will begin at the Junior League Building, 902 Dengar between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. The finish time for the walk will be no later than 12:30 p.m. Walking directions will be provided at the sign-in table on Dengar.
Those new to our city will be able to see some of the Bush Homes, the Wadley Barron Duck Pond on ‘A’ Street, and lovely homes in Racket Club. Hopefully those who have not visited our fair city before, will be so impressed that they will either stay for a few days, or come back and walk the some of the nine (9) walks that the Midland Walkabout Volkssport Club has sanctioned with the American Volkssport Association.
These walks are in Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, Stanton, Monahans, and the Ft. Davis area. The I-20 Wildlife Preserve will also be an attraction, and who knows, with our recent rains, the ducks could possibly be out in full force!
True Volkssporters are always looking for new walks to take them through new areas where they can get AVA credit. Once here, many will not leave without doing all the walks.
The DoubleTree/Hilton at 117 W. Wall will be the host hotel for the weekend. Friday evening, Bob Hicks, a member of our club will host a wine and cheese get together as the walkers gather around 5:30 p.m.
After the walk on Saturday morning the walkers will gather at the Junior League Building for a light lunch and the Texas Volkssporting Association’s Semi-Annual Meeting.
The TVA meetings date back to the early 1990’s with the first meeting being held in Houston. Since then, many cities have been involved including Brenham, Granbury, Abilene, San Antonio, Plano, Dallas, and Fort Worth. Helen Hull of Garland, Texas, is the current President for the TVA.
Carolyn Peterson is our current President of the Midland Walkabout Volkssport Club and she would be delighted to welcome you into the world of volkssporting. If you want more details on this very special event, download our August 2nd TVA Brochure here. This will provide more information about the walk, hotel reservations, etc. Of course, feel free to fill out our Contact Us Form and we’ll get back in touch with you asap!
