The Walkabouters had a great walk together and the event was even celebrated with a birthday get-together for our Midland Walkabout Founder, Jack Rogers.
It was Jack’s 87th birthday that day. Jack, Alex, and Carolyn did the 5K, and the others did the 10K. The 10K walkers were caught in a rain storm that wasn’t supposed to hit until later in the day. They got completely soaked.
Afterwards the group met at Crispie’s Café for brunch. We had to turn off the ceiling fan over our table because it was chilling the wet walkers!
The Saturday walkers were: Sammy Hunnicutt; Alex Rose; Jack Rogers, Read Johnston, Gary & Carolyn Petersen, and guests Rhonda Patterson and Bonnie Resley.
Our next scheduled walk will be at the Big Spring State Park Walk this Saturday, August 12th. For anyone wanting to carpool or caravan, we will meet behind the Jumburrito parking lot by the Midland Park mall at 7:00 a.m.
If you prefer, you can meet the group at the top of the hill in the Big Spring State Park at 8:00 a.m. Feel free to bring a friend!
The State Park is contained within the city limits of Big Spring. The walk itself is probably fine for most everyone in our group, but there is a hill which gets you up high enough to overlook the fine city of Big Spring! This is a very pleasant walk, and paved all the way, except for the nature trail portion, which is not required on the walk. You have the choice to do a 5K or 10K. The trail is not, however, suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, etc.. Restrooms are available in the park.
In the past, a group has finished the event by eating at the Hotel Settles, however, since Sammy (our club president), use to live in Big Spring, he has an alternative place in mind where we can have brunch and socialize.

Sammy, Carolyn, Gary, Ken and Susan spent Saturday, July 29th at the Chihuahua Desert Nature Center, outside Fort Davis, to create a new 5K and 10K year-round walk, for 2018.
This private, non-profit area is filled with trails from easy to difficult, a botanic garden and lots of wildlife, flowers, canyons and hills. The group will be returning in October to finalize directions.
More news to come on this fun and beautiful walk!
A group of the AVA Midland Walkabouters came on Saturday and had a nice…. cool walk inside the Midland Park Mall. This is always a fun walk inside the mall as it’s quiet, and there’s always a lot of things to look at and talk about! The new Walkabout shirts turned out great too, and it’s been fun having folks come up and ask us about our Club!
Since July can always be one of our hottest months, the Walkabout’s monthly walk will be inside where it’ll be cool!
Come and join us
on Saturday, July 8th,
INSIDE THE MIDLAND PARK MALL
AT THE FOOD COURT
at 8:00 a.m.
What it lacks in scenery is more than compensated by the great friends and conversation (and air conditioning!)
Some of the group plans to congregate at the Doubletree Hilton afterwards for coffee and a muffin. So please bring $3.00 and your record booklets and join us. Start Packets (with free walk coupons) will be available for new members. Friends and guests are always welcome.
Due to the July 4th holiday & Murray’s Deli closed for the occasion, the Midland Walkabouters didn’t let that stop them from having a fun get-together and meet-up!
A special thanks to Alex for sharing her lovely home, along with all the pizza & drinks that were served.
Download the minutes from the July 3rd monthly meeting.
Our Club President, Sammy Hunnicutt, met with the Permian Basin Outing Club (PBOC) earlier this month to discuss a possible joint outing with the PBOC to Ft. Davis in October.
There will be a trip to Ft. Davis on October 13, 14, and 15. Anyone interested should get your hotel or bed and breakfast reservation in as soon as possible as the spaces will get filled quickly.
There are a number of hotels and B&B’s in Ft. Davis. The Hotel Limpia is in the middle of town. The Ft. Davis Motel is on the outskirts of Ft. Davis as you are coming in from Balmorhea.
Unfortunately, the Indian Lodge is already booked solid for that weekend.
Here are some links for your consideration:
Please put the weekend of October 13 – 15 on your calendar. More information will be forthcoming as the date get closer, but make those reservations!
This promises to be a great outing.
With the 4th of July holiday upon us, we are needing to move the location for this months meeting. A special thanks to Alex Rose for donating her home for our July meeting!
Plans are to have a Pizza Party! Be sure and let Alex or Carolyn know if you are planning to attend, so they can make sure there is enough pizza for everyone.
